Jill McCarthy - Panelist

With more than 30 years’ experience, Jill leads a high-achieving business recruitment team for KCADC — driving new business, talent attraction, and capital investment to KC’s 18-county, 50+ city, bi-state region. Jill works with companies and national site location consultants considering the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area for expansion or relocation, offering urban, suburban, and rural options.

Jill works across multiple disciplines including IT, cybersecurity, data centers, mission critical, headquarters, finance, shared and customer service operations, and select industrial projects. A few notable successes include A Place for Mom, DataBank, Eastern Airlines, Fiserv, Littler, Meta, OptumRx, Torch.AI, U.S. Bank, USDA, and the U.S. Marine Corps MCEITS.

Twice-awarded North America’s Top 50 Economic Developer, Jill is a 2018 honoree of the KCBJ Women of Influence (formerly Women Who Mean Business) and is on the KC Tech Council Industry Leadership Council and KC Ballet Business Council. A former president of CREW KC, Jill mentored in the international CREW Network Leadership Program. Married 39 years, Jill is a lover of dogs, the outdoors, a theatre geek, sports & Army fan!

Courtney Johanning - Panelist

Chief Development Officer

Courtney Johanning is a proven nonprofit executive with over 20 years of leadership experience in healthcare philanthropy. She currently serves as Chief Development Officer for NKC Health, where she oversees strategic fundraising, donor engagement, and philanthropic initiatives that drive growth and community impact.

Prior to her current role, Courtney spent more than 12 years in various leadership positions at The University of Kansas Health System, including Senior Development Director for Major Gifts and Cancer Services. She began her career with the American Red Cross as the chapter’s first Event Coordinator, establishing a foundation of innovation and operational excellence that continues to shape her leadership approach.

Courtney brings deep expertise in fundraising strategy, donor relationship management, major gift development, and cross-functional collaboration. Her career reflects a consistent track record of securing significant philanthropic support, advancing mission-driven programs, and strengthening community health outcomes.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and a Master of Public Administration with an emphasis in nonprofit management, both from the University of Missouri–Columbia. Courtney is committed to lifelong learning and community betterment. She resides in Riverside, Missouri, with her husband, Brian, and their three daughters.

Susan Hiland - Moderator

Award-winning Journalist, Public Speaker and Media Relations Specialist

Susan Hiland is a successful communications professional with 25+ years of experience in broadcast journalism. She leverages her Emmy Award-winning TV reporter and anchor skills to create impactful videos, assist in crisis communications, host a podcast, coach staff and students for interviews, and facilitate positive news coverage.

Susan’s expertise has earned her local, regional, and national awards. Throughout her career, she has worked at TV stations across the country, including FOX 4 in Kansas City and as a Midwest Correspondent for ABC affiliates in Chicago, St. Louis, and New Haven, CT. She was named Kansas City’s Best News Anchor and Social Media Club’s Trailblazer of the Year.

Susan holds a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism from Missouri State University. She is an active member of several professional organizations, including the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the National School Public Relations Association. She is also a board member of the Northland Animal Welfare Society.
