Chief Stacey Graves - Panelist

Chief of Police, Kansas City Police Department

Chief Stacey Graves, a lifelong Kansas Citian, began her career at KCPD in 1997 as a civilian records clerk.  After joining the police academy in December of 1997, she held multiple assignments as a police officer, including Central Patrol Division, East Patrol Division, the Drug Enforcement Unit, and the Career Criminal Section.  Graves was promoted to Sergeant in 2007.  During her tenure as a Sergeant, she was assigned to Patrol, the Media Unit as a Public Information Officer, and served as an Operations Sergeant in the Chief’s Office, working under Chief Darryl Forté. Promoted to Captain in 2014, Graves was assigned to Internal Affairs, returned to the Media Unit, and Patrol.  In 2018, she was promoted to the rank of Major. As Major, Graves was the Commander of Shoal Creek Division, Human Resources, and served as the Executive Officer in the Patrol Bureau Office.

On December 15, 2022, twenty-five years after starting the police academy, Graves was selected to be the chief.  At 48 years of age, Graves became the 48th Police Chief in KCPD’s 148-year history, and also became the first woman to serve as permanent chief.

Graves obtained her associate’s degree from Penn Valley.  Graves went on to earn a B.A. in Administration of Justice from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and an Executive Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in Leadership from Benedictine College.

Senator Maggie Nurrenbern - Panelist

Missouri’s 17th Senatorial District

Senator Maggie Nurrenbern was elected in 2024 to represent the 17th Senatorial District in Clay County in the Missouri Senate. She previously served in the Missouri House of Representatives, where she was elected by the citizens of House District 15 in 2020.

Sen. Nurrenbern is a lifelong resident of Clay County and a 2002 graduate of Smithville High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Communication: Journalism from Truman State University and participated in the university’s internship program, interning in the Missouri Senate in 2006.

Following graduation, Sen. Nurrenbern married her husband Gregg, and together they joined the Peace Corps. They spent two years as Peace Corps Volunteers working in public health and education in the rural community of El Chaco, Ecuador.

Upon returning to Missouri, Sen. Nurrenbern returned to school to earn her teaching certificate in Spanish, a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and a TESOL endorsement from UMKC. She taught Spanish, Journalism, and ELL at University Academy in Kansas City and North Kansas City High School, sponsoring numerous student organizations and serving as the building representative for the NKC-NEA. As a former teacher, union, and PTA member, Sen. Nurrenbern has brought focus and expertise to education policy in the Missouri legislature.

Senator Nurrenbern continues her commitment to community service as a board member for Feed Northland Kids, a member of the PTA at Oakwood Manor Elementary School, the Gladstone and Northland Chambers of Commerce, and Holy Family Catholic Church. Her proudest title of all is “mom.” She and her husband Gregg have three sons, Luke, Eli, and Henry.

Susan Hiland - Moderator

Award-winning Journalist, Public Speaker and Media Relations Specialist

Susan Hiland is a successful communications professional with 25+ years of experience in broadcast journalism. The Kansas City native and Oak Park graduate is the Director of Media and Public Relations for North Kansas City Schools. She leverages her Emmy Award-winning TV reporter and anchor skills to create impactful videos, assist in crisis communications, host a podcast, coach staff and students for interviews, and facilitate positive news coverage.

Susan’s expertise has earned her local, regional, and national awards. Throughout her career, she has worked at TV stations across the country including FOX 4 in Kansas City, Midwest Correspondent for ABC affiliates in Chicago, St. Louis and New Haven, CT. She was named Kansas City’s Best News Anchor and Social Media Club’s Trailblazer of the Year.

Susan holds a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism from Missouri State University. She is an active member of several professional organizations, including the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the National School Public Relations Association. She is also a board member of the Northland Animal Welfare Society.
